At NZ Manufacturing, we’re always excited to sit down with other prominent fitness professionals like Kimba Smith who are doing so much good for our industry.
Kimba has such a warm and inviting personality that it’s no surprise that she’s been so successful. Kimba has an incredibly varied background that not only makes her great at what she does, but it also allows her to connect with her clients on a deeper level.
Take a few minutes to read through our recent interview with Kimba Smith to learn more about her background as well as how she uses NZ Manufacturing resistance training equipment with many of her clients.
Can you tell us a bit about your background?
I have been in the health and wellness industry for 15 years. I have a degree in psychology, which I think is integral to my approach to teaching fitness and nutrition. My client programs often specialize in weight loss but all have a behavioral component focused on building a better life and overall body image.
I currently run an in-house fitness retreat located in Park City, Utah where all sorts of individuals come for help with fitness and nutrition. We’ve helped everyone from beginners to seasoned athletes as well as individuals dealing with a variety of health issues including shoulder, knee, hip, and other injuries. We utilize all of the latest fitness equipment and operate out of the Westgate Resort Park in beautiful Park City, Utah.
What got you involved in resistance training?
I come from a very diverse background where growing up I had a father who struggled with depression and mental behaviors as well as a sister with Spina Bifida. Both of them passed away at a young age, which caused me to realize how huge a gift the physical body and a positive mindset can be. Because of this upbringing, I was drawn into the industry to learn more about the brain, behaviors, addictions and how the body works with the mind to complement one another.
Why do you love what you do?
I’m most passionate about sharing the truth about realistic programs that can be tailored to work for each individual client. Each plan must take into account injury prevention, emotional and mental needs to ensure the program is sustainable and realistic. I’m also extremely passionate about safety and helping my clients understand how they can apply the principles they learn while working with me on an everyday basis.
Since most of my clients are not local, it’s important that I help them understand techniques and behaviors that will ensure success when they return home.
What are some of the common misconceptions about the fitness industry?
There are so many. A few that I can think of include that it has to be hard, you have to punish yourself or that it has to hurt and that you have to train every day for hours on end. The reality is that a good program that’s tailored to a client’s goals and needs is key and can be used with very little modification for quite a long time. The key is being consistent and being committed to setting goals and being willing to execute day in and day out to create sustainable habits.
How do you break bad habits that may be detrimental to a client’s health?
We first do an evaluation where we lean on some of my psychology background to identify certain behaviors around food and exercise. We’ll then break down what a client can start doing each day starting today.
We try to help our clients remove comparisons and instead focus on the individual process and celebrate every success regardless of the size.
How integral is nutrition to an overall wellness plan?
Nutrition is huge as well as a sound mindset that includes truthful principles about what food does in our bodies and that there’s no magic with any foods. We try to be extremely careful with the language we use around food, but nutrition and mindset are often the main things that most of our clients struggle with when they come to us for help.
What NZ Manufacturing products do you use when training your clients?
We use a variety of NZ Manufacturing products to help our patients with injury prevention and rehabilitation as well as stabilization. We use the Original StretchCordz® with Handles as well as a variety of the in-water training products from NZ Manufacturing because they offer a great workout that is safe and helps to prevent injury and fatigue.
Why have you chosen to continue to use NZ Manufacturing products over the years?
The #1 reason we’ve stuck with NZ Manufacturing is due to the high level of customer service provided by Maureen and her team. The products from NZ Manufacturing last the longest, have the largest variety and the quality is top-notch compared to other resistance training equipment. In addition, if we ever need anything, the minute we give them a call, it’s in the mail and we don’t even have to think about it for another moment.
