Tallmadge, Ohio – December 12, 2011 – NZ Manufacturing, Inc., a leader in high-quality resistance training and physical rehabilitation tools, recently explored the advantages of making a New Year’s goal, rather than a resolution, in regard to exercising.

By definition, a resolution is a formal expression of opinion or intention. It’s a resolve or determination to do something. However, a resolution usually has no plan of action. And that may be why an estimated 80% of New Year’s resolutions are broken within the first two weeks.

In contrast, a goal is a result or achievement toward which effort is directed. It’s something to strive for, to accomplish. Goals, if properly conceived and sincerely desired, come with an action plan. A person plans how and when to achieve the goal.

While resolutions and goals can both help get you where you want to be, most people do far better to think in terms of goals. So this year, make it a goal, rather than a resolution, to exercise more. Here are some considerations to help you get started:

How do you decide on a goal?
When considering your exercise goal, make it realistic and measurable. Rather than a radical resolution that requires dramatic, broad lifestyle changes, break your ultimate goal up into more manageable, realistic goals that could lead you to it. And then tackle one goal at a time.

What’s your motivation for your goal?
Your exercise goal should be something you really desire to achieve, not just something that society says is good or your family would like to see you do. If you don’t have strong, internal motivation within yourself, you simply won’t be successful.

How are you going to accomplish it?
Setting an exercise goal without formulating a plan is merely wishful thinking. In order for your New Year goal to have resolve, it must translate into clear, realistic steps that can be put into action. What’s more, keep in mind that you have a limited window of opportunity – usually just the first few days of January – to harness your motivation. After that, most people forget their goals, or resolutions, completely.

What is your reward upon achievement?
Celebrate exercise milestones by treating yourself to something that doesn’t contradict your goal. And be prepared to view setbacks as lessons for growth. Obsessing over occasional slips won’t help you achieve your goal. Do the best you can each day, take one step at a time and be willing to make adjustments as you go along.
