When using resistance bands, it is important to take the following safety precautions:

  • Choose proper equipment -When choosing resistance bands to be used in water, it is important to choose the proper equipment.  Some companies may only offer one type of resistance band and these may or may not be meant to be used in water.  Choosing swim training aids from a company like NZ Manufacturing allows you to purchase either dryland resistance training equipment or in-water resistance equipment.  Our in-water equipment is specifically designed to be used in water and is used by International Olympians and novice swimmers around the world.
  • Inspect equipment prior to use -It is important to always check your resistance equipment prior to each use.  If the product has any sort of cracks, tears or other damage, it is important to no longer use that piece of equipment.
  • Do not rely on an instructor -If you are working with a trainer for resistance band training, it is important that you still physically inspect all equipment.  It is not enough to trust that your trainer has done the necessary inspections.
  • Purchase multiple bands -While some people want to save when purchasing resistance bands, safety should always come first.  Purchasing multiple bands of different resistance levels is much safer than trying to shorten a band to create more resistance.  While you may be saving money in the short term by reusing resistance bands, you could injure yourself or others by misusing your bands.
  • Don’t overstretch resistance bands -Every resistance band has its limit.  However, our StrechCordz®, TurfCordz® and MediCordz® bands can stretch up to three times their original length, and all of our bungies such as the TURFCORDZ® SAFETY SUPER BUNGIE can stretch up to 1-2 times original length. Trainers typically will advise not to extend a band more than twice its resting length.  Try to avoid breaking this rule or you may cause injury.
  • Rinse your bands -If you are using swim training aids in chlorine or salt water, make sure to rinse the bands with tap water after each use.  It is also important after rinsing to hang your resistance bands to dry out of any direct UV light.
  • Never release bands while under pressure -It is extremely important to never release bands while participating in resistance band training.  You cannot only injure yourself, but other as well.
  • Read product instructions -Reading the product information that was included with your swim training aids will allow you to properly use and care for your equipment.  Do not merely throw away the product instructions as they have important safety information and should be kept close to all of your resistance band equipment.
